A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:
Proof of Concept
Explorations that test ideas and functionality.
Functional Prototype
Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.
Appearance Prototype
Looks like the final product, but is not functional.
Design Prototype
Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.
Production Prototype
Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

These photos and videos provide a detailed look at this project’s development.
Is there a better feeling than vanquishing your opponent after a hard fought battle? The look in their eyes when they know they gave it everything they had, but it just wasn't good enough. At MagneTag, we make technology so you can taste sweet victory.
WHAT IS MAGNETAG?
MagneTag is an advanced system of wearable magnetic field sensors. They are designed to electronically detect the foamy blows of justice you rain down on your (fr)enemies using our arsenal of magnetically enhanced foam swords, ninja stars, and blaster darts.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Magnets dude, magnets. I personally hold two degrees in physics and I still don't fully understand their magical powers. We employ a phenomenon known as electromagnetic induction: when a magnet moves near a conductor, it makes the electrons want to move around too. We can measure that!
FUN. IRL.
I feel like I spend 80% of my waking life looking at pixels on a screen. When I'm not making spreadsheets and powerpoints, I'm insta-snapping my face-tweets. And kids, don't even get me started... Stop swiping on your smart phone, and start swiping with foam swords.
IS IT SPORT OR A GAME?
I don't know. But you need more cardio probably. I can't play for more than a few mintues without breaking a sweat. Start training now so you can be ready when the zombies show up.
The MagneTag sensor comes with a default game mode of "3 hits and you are out". There is a loud beeper that tells you you have been hit, and a full color LED that changes with each loss of health.
Hardware Studio Connection is new initiative from Kickstarter, Avnet, and Dragon Innovation, providing resources and support for independent hardware creators. We are proud to be in the innaugural class of participants in this program. This campaign has been vetted by 3rd party engineers to ensure our meticulous planning is on target. We won't let you down!
This sensor is designed to be made without expensive tooling which can often cause production timelines to slip. Its basically just a 6"x6" circuit board with rubber edge trim, a couple of screws, strap webbing, and plastic buckles. Instead of working with a foreign manufacturer, we will source from the USA and assemble everything in-house.
Literally anything can be magnetized and be compatible with our system. We love pool noodles because they are the safest and cheapest. Gloves or socks are also easy to magnetize. I'm not suggesting you go all Walker Texas Ranger on anyone, but you could. Note: the bigger the magnet, the longer the effective range of the tagger.
You made it this far down the page. You must really be thinking about backing this project. What more can I say to convince you?
Want to watch my "Shark Tank" style pitch? I'm more of an engineer than a salesman, but I gave it my best shot.
Risks and challenges
Making 500 to 5000 of anything is challenging. Its a lot of work but not a big enough job to take advantage of mass production. This is not the first rodeo for team MagneTag. If you search this site you will find our first unsuccessful Kickstarter. Even though we didn't raise enough money, in the following year we shipped over 200 units of that initial design. The people that bought them were very happy, but we decided to change the product because there was too much labor involved, which means we had to sell them at a price most people couldn't afford. We think we have solved this problem with the newest iteration.
This project has greatly reduced risks. Taking a page from the IKEA manual: It is dead simple to put together. We will likely end up having to assemble these units with a small team, so it is designed accordingly.
Finally we have been participating in the Hardware Studio Connection program (https://hardware.studio/connection) which has partnered us with professional design engineers to review our production plans and costs to make sure we can deliver our rewards on time and on budget. You can have confidence when you back this project that we will get you your MagneTag!
